Course Description
This course reviewed research on AAC in the autistic population and how features of a Lingraphica AAC device may meet their needs. Characteristics of good candidates were reviewed, including how to identify when Lingraphica is not the most appropriate choice. The course examined programming tips, implementation, sensory differences, and stimming. It also addressed neurodiversity-affirming care.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:
  1. State features of a Lingraphica AAC device that may benefit an autistic person
  2. Recognize when Lingraphica is and is not an appropriate AAC option for a patient
  3. Describe ways to program the device to increase communication and independence
  4. Identify two ways AAC can be used in addition to traditional communicative functions
  5. State two unique considerations for AAC in the autistic population

Time-Ordered Agenda
  • 5 minutes: Introduction 
  • 10 minutes: Neurodiversity-affirming care and principles 
  • 10 minutes: Research Review  
  • 10 minutes: Lingraphica AAC: features/programming and device candidacy: When to consider Lingraphica 
  • 10 minutes: Clinical Implementation and considerations – best practices, sensory differences, stimming 
  • 10 minutes: Using AAC for other functions: Visual schedules. Visual cues. 
  • 5 minutes: Conclusion and Questions/Answers

Beth McHose, MS Ed, CCC-SLP    

Beth joined Lingraphica in 2018. She has experience providing speech and language services for the adult population in the acute, rehab, and home health settings. Beth holds a bachelors in English from Virginia Tech and a Master’s in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Old Dominion University.

Sara Schneider, M.S. CCC-SLP   

Sara joined Lingraphica in 2022.  She has experience providing speech and language services to pediatric and adult populations across school, outpatient, acute, rehab and skilled nursing settings.  Sara holds a Bachelors in Communication Disorders from Butler University and a Master's in Speech Pathology from Purdue University.
