Course Description
This course is focused on non-partisan voting advocacy for citizens who have situational barriers that may obstruct them from exercising their right to vote; specifically, barriers such as physical or cognitive-communicative challenges, or congregate living. It informed SLPs of resources and strategies that could be implemented therapeutically for clients opting to return to this life activity.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to: 

  • Identify two ways for determining if a voter advocacy website is legitimate.
  • Define two strategies for supporting a citizen who has physical challenges in pursuing their right to vote.
  • Describe three approaches for supporting a client with communicative challenges in pursing their right to vote.
  • Explain whether someone living in congregate housing is allowed to vote.

Sara Kempner, M.A.

Sara Kempner holds an MA in Political Science from the University of Connecticut. Her career mission is to uplift and empower individuals through access to education and voting. Her avenues include civic education, student mobilization, voter outreach, political organizing and digital publishing. Sara Kempner currently innovates voter engagement through creative campaigns and strategic collaborations for U.S Vote Foundation (US Vote). Her main focus is on narrowing the voter turnout gap experienced by underrepresented citizens. Most recently, Sara Kempner is the co-creator of the State-by-State Resource for Voters with Disabilities and the You’re Eligible Situations - YES Campaign at us.vote.

Jennifer Stanley, MA, CCC-SLP  

Jennifer Stanley joined Lingraphica in 2018. She has experience providing speech and language services for the adult population in acute, skilled, outpatient and home health settings. Jennifer also has early intervention experience providing speech and language services to the 0-3 population in the natural environment. Jennifer holds a BS in speech pathology and audiology and a MA in speech pathology from Ball State University, Muncie, IN.
