Course Description

To maximize communication with patients with aphasia, the interdisciplinary team must have knowledge of different communication strategies and tools that can be utilized to facilitate optimal patient care and collaborative goal setting.  This course defines and outlines the characteristics of fluent and non-fluent aphasia, provides aphasia focused communication tips, and introduces Alternative and Augmentative Communication supports (including No Tech, Light Tech and High Tech AAC).  Guidance on how to utilize these different supports to enhance communication with patients with aphasia is provided.  

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:​

• Define Aphasia and name three common characteristics   
• Identify two ways that an interdisciplinary approach improves patient care for the Person with Aphasia (PWA)
• Identify three types of communication supports and give an example of each
• Recall two ways an AAC device can be used with an Occupational Therapist to achieve session goals

Course Completion Requirements 

1. Attendance and/or Completion of Online Lecture
2. Completion of Learning Assessment with a minimum score of 70%
3. Completion of a PD Activity Evaluation

Teresa Thompson, MA, CCC-SLP  

Teresa joined Lingraphica in 2020. She has more than 12 years of experience in speech-language pathology and has worked as a speech-language pathologist with adults in the acute care, outpatient, skilled nursing and home health settings. Teresa earned her BSBA from the University of Denver and her Masters of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology from Northwestern University.
