This course focused on facilitating conversations about acceptance and grief with survivors of brain injury, stroke, and other neurological conditions, with special considerations and strategies for AAC device users. We discussed supporting individuals through recovery and rehabilitation, survivor perspectives and therapeutic activities for clinical and personal use to improve outlook on life.

Learning Objectives
 
After completing this course, participants will be able to:​
  • Describe the importance of conversations about grief and acceptance with survivors of brain injury, stroke and/or neurodegenerative conditions  
  • Identify four possible stages of grief and statements that may be associated with each.  
  • Define the SLPs role in identifying communication supports that facilitate conversations related to both grief and acceptance.   
  • State three clinical resources available to assist an AAC device user to discuss their current and/or past feelings about their rehabilitation journey.   


    Time-Ordered Agenda
  •  5 minutes: Introduction to speaker and topic 

  •  5 minutes: Discussion of SLPs role in facilitating conversations about acceptance and grief 

  •  5 minutes: Impacts of grief on moving forward on needed communication supports 

  •  5 minutes: What might acceptance look like? 

  •  10 minutes: A long term survivor perspective on accepting brain injury 

  •  20 minutes: Navigating through stages of grief and barriers to acceptance through discussion and writing, with adaptations for individuals in need of communication supports 

  •  5 minutes: Conclusion 

  •  5 minutes: Q & A

Beth joined Lingraphica in 2018. She has experience providing speech and language services for the adult population in the acute, rehab, and home health settings. Beth holds a bachelors in English from Virginia Tech and a Master’s in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Old Dominion University.

Angela Mooney, MS, CCC-SLP  

Angela joined Lingraphica in 2021. She has experience providing speech and language services for the adult population in the acute, outpatient, and inpatient rehab settings. Angela holds a bachelors in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Indiana University and a Master’s in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Northwestern University.

Caitlin Mueller, MS, CCC-SLP  

Caitlin Mueller joined Lingraphica’s Clinical Consultant Team in 2015. She holds a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, a B.S. in Communication Studies from Utah State University and an M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of the Pacific. She has experience with evaluating and treating clients with a variety of communication impairments using multiple AAC devices and apps.

Anna Reeve, MS, CCC-SLP  

Anna joined Lingraphica in 2019. As a speech-language pathologist, Anna has treated adults with communication and swallowing impairments in primarily outpatient settings, with intermittent experience in the inpatient, home health and SNF settings. She has worked extensively with the adult neurogenic patient population in multidisciplinary clinics. Anna holds a MS degree in Speech- Language Pathology from Idaho State University.

Sara Schneider, M.S. CCC-SLP   

Sara joined Lingraphica in 2022.  She has experience providing speech and language services to pediatric and adult populations across school, outpatient, acute, rehab and skilled nursing settings.  Sara holds a Bachelors in Communication Disorders from Butler University and a Master's in Speech Pathology from Purdue University.

Carole J. Starr, M.S.  

Carole Starr, MS, has been living with brain injury since a car accident in 1999, which left her unable to return to her life as an educator and classical musician. Carole is now a national keynote speaker, the author of the award-winning book To Root & To Rise: Accepting Brain Injury and the founder of the Maine-based survivor group Brain Injury Voices. Carole serves on the BIAA Maine Chapter Advisory Board, the BIAA Brain Injury Advisory Council and the TBI Advisory and Leadership Group.

Jennifer Stanley, MA, CCC-SLP    

Jennifer Stanley joined Lingraphica in 2018. She has experience providing speech and language services for the adult population in acute, skilled, outpatient and home health settings. Jennifer also has early intervention experience providing speech and language services to the 0-3 population in the natural environment. Jennifer holds a BS in speech pathology and audiology and a MA in speech pathology from Ball State University, Muncie, IN.
