Course Description
This professional development course focuses on interventions to introduce, educate, and train Occupational Therapy Practitioners in the use of AAC to facilitate communication during all aspects of occupational performance. It highlights AAC as both a therapeutic tool and a means to improve and maintain function, allowing individuals to actively participate in meaningful occupations while addressing barriers to communication. Participants will receive a basic overview of Lingraphica’s communication platform, Hub, as well as available accessories for functional use, recommendations for therapy integration, and resources for supporting patients with Parkinson’s Disease.
DISCLAIMER: This course is focused on Lingraphica high-tech AAC devices. There will be limited information about other device manufacturers

Participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize progressive communication & motoric impairments in patients with Parkinson’s Disease 
  2. Describe the use of AAC in Parkinson’s Disease 
  3. Describe Parkinson's Disease customizations, accessories, and setting modifications for AAC 
  4. Identify opportunities for collaboration and co-treating with patients with Parkinson’s Disease 
  5. Explain the psychosocial impact of Parkinson’s Disease and the OT’s role in supporting patients

Time-Ordered Agenda:

  • Introduction - 5 minutes
  • Parkinson’s Disease motor & communication review- 5 minutes
  • AAC for Parkinson’s Disease -10 minutes
  • Using AAC for ADLs/IADLs - 10 minutes
  • Co-Treating with SLP - 5 minutes
  • Accessories - 10 minutes
  • The Lingraphica Community for Parkinson’s - 10 minutes

  1. Attendance and/or Completion of Online Lecture
  2. Completion of Learning Assessment with a minimum score of 70%

Randi Dirnberger earned her Bachelors of Science degree from Southeast Missouri State University in Child and Family Studies and her Associates degree as an Occupational Therapy Assistant from Brown Mackie College. Randi has experience working with people across the lifespan, helping clients from pediatric to geriatric reach their maximum level of independence.

Allie Reed, M.S. CCC-SLP
Allie joined Lingraphica in 2021. She is an adult specialized speech language pathologist and has experience working in acute care, inpatient rehab, and outpatient. Allie has a passion for aphasia and has worked with this population over the past decade. Allie earned her Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology & Audiology from the University of Nevada, Reno and her Master of Science from Northwestern University.
