This course has been developed for delivery to speech-language pathologists. It is registered with ASHA for 1.0 CEUs (10 hours).

Important: The requirements of this course will take time to complete, and it will be unlikely learners will be able to complete all course requirements by the time the current course offering expires at the end of this month. The Clinical Education Team at Lingraphica suggests you come back to the Learning Portal when you have completed all the requirements and enroll again in the current session for that month. Then, you may upload your time-log and complete the learning assessment and post-course evaluation to complete the CEU process.


Learners must use the most updated version of Chrome for all CEU activities on this portal. Using mobile devices or other browsers at any juncture will cause an error in the course completion process.

1. Prerequisite Activity: Complete the live or on-demand version of Lingraphica’s course “Emergency Preparedness for AAC: Essential Strategies for SLPs” which is eligible for .15 CEUs (on-demand course available as of 10/1/24). This course can be accessed in the Lingraphica Learning Portal at https://learn.aphasia.com
2. Download and print the course attachments. Follow the instructions and complete the activities contained in the attachments. Please read through the all the attachments before beginning this course.
3. Minimum 10-hour Time Log Completion: This is a 10-hour self-study course to give you the tools you need to provide education to first responders and prepare them to communicate with AAC users in emergency situations. The learner must track the time they spend completing the steps below, comprising a minimum of 10 hours to earn CEU credit. To get started, download the time log from the link listed in the “Resources” section for this course on the Lingraphica Learning Portal. Fill in the time log with the time you spend completing the course requirements. You do not need to complete each step in one sitting (tip: document time spent on each activity as you go). If you have questions or require clinical assistance during this course, please reach out to Lingraphica’s Clinical Education Manager, Teresa Thompson, at teresa.thompson@lingraphica.com to set up a call. Any time spent on calls/emails with Lingraphica’s clinical team may also be included in your time-log.

Course Description

SLPs can significantly impact communities by educating first responders on supporting individuals using AAC during emergencies. This course reviewed current research, guidelines, and resources to develop effective in-service training for first responders. It also provided practical advice on connecting with local first responder agencies to schedule these crucial training sessions.

Time-Ordered Agenda

  • 60 minutes: Review of research regarding supporting communication between AAC users and first responders as well as resources for providing training to first responders.
  • 270 minutes: Develop AAC training for first responders utilizing guidance from resources provided.
  • 90 minutes: Contact local first responder groups to set up training.
  • 120 minutes: Provide in-service to a local first responder group.
  • 60 minutes: Complete the First Responder Education Project Summary.
 
 

Learning Outcomes 

Participants will be able to: 

  • Create an AAC training program for first responders, incorporating best practices and guidelines from identified resources.
  • Develop a communication plan to effectively reach out to local first responder groups.
  • Deliver t he AAC training program to a local first responder group.
  • Facilitate hands-on practice and discussions to ensure understanding and application of AAC communication techniques.
  • Summarize the outcomes and feedback from the training sessions.
 

 

Course Completion Requirements 

  1. Attendance and/or Completion of Online Lecture, Readings, and Activities
  2. Completion of Learning Assessment with a minimum score of 70%
  3. Completion of an Activity Evaluation
  4. Upload a time-log consisting of at least three hours of required course activity

Angela joined Lingraphica in 2021. She has experience providing speech and language services for the adult population in the acute, outpatient, and inpatient rehab settings. Angela holds a bachelors in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Indiana University and a Master’s in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Northwestern University.

Anna Reeve, MS, CCC-SLP

Anna joined Lingraphica in 2019. As a speech-language pathologist, Anna has treated adults with communication and swallowing impairments in primarily outpatient settings, with intermittent experience in the inpatient, home health and SNF settings. She has worked extensively with the adult neurogenic patient population in multidisciplinary clinics. Anna holds a MS degree in Speech- Language Pathology from Idaho State University.

Sara Schneider, M.S. CCC-SLP 

Sara joined Lingraphica in 2022.  She has experience providing speech and language services to pediatric and adult populations across school, outpatient, acute, rehab and skilled nursing settings.  Sara holds a Bachelors in Communication Disorders from Butler University and a Master's in Speech Pathology from Purdue University.

Jennifer Stanley, MA, CCC-SLP  

Jennifer Stanley joined Lingraphica in 2018. She has experience providing speech and language services for the adult population in acute, skilled, outpatient and home health settings. Jennifer also has early intervention experience providing speech and language services to the 0-3 population in the natural environment. Jennifer holds a BS in speech pathology and audiology and a MA in speech pathology from Ball State University, Muncie, IN.

Teresa earned her BSBA from the University of Denver and her Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology from Northwestern University.
