Course Description
SLPs can significantly impact communities by educating first responders on supporting individuals using AAC during emergencies. This course reviewed current research, guidelines, and resources to develop effective in-service training for first responders. It also provided practical advice on connecting with local first responder agencies to schedule these crucial training sessions.

Time-Ordered Agenda
- 60 minutes: Review of research regarding supporting communication between AAC users and first responders as well as resources for providing training to first responders.
- 270 minutes: Develop AAC training for first responders utilizing guidance from resources provided.
- 90 minutes: Contact local first responder groups to set up training.
- 120 minutes: Provide in-service to a local first responder group.
- 60 minutes: Complete the First Responder Education Project Summary.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
- Create an AAC training program for first responders, incorporating best practices and guidelines from identified resources.
- Develop a communication plan to effectively reach out to local first responder groups.
- Deliver t he AAC training program to a local first responder group.
- Facilitate hands-on practice and discussions to ensure understanding and application of AAC communication techniques.
- Summarize the outcomes and feedback from the training sessions.
Course Completion Requirements
- Attendance and/or Completion of Online Lecture, Readings, and Activities
- Completion of Learning Assessment with a minimum score of 70%
- Completion of an Activity Evaluation
- Upload a time-log consisting of at least three hours of required course activity

Angela Mooney, MS, CCC-SLP
Angela joined Lingraphica in 2021. She has experience providing speech and language services for the adult population in the acute, outpatient, and inpatient rehab settings. Angela holds a bachelors in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Indiana University and a Master’s in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Northwestern University.

Anna Reeve, MS, CCC-SLP
Anna joined Lingraphica in 2019. As a speech-language pathologist, Anna has treated adults with communication and swallowing impairments in primarily outpatient settings, with intermittent experience in the inpatient, home health and SNF settings. She has worked extensively with the adult neurogenic patient population in multidisciplinary clinics. Anna holds a MS degree in Speech- Language Pathology from Idaho State University.

Sara Schneider, M.S. CCC-SLP
Sara joined Lingraphica in 2022. She has experience providing speech and language services to pediatric and adult populations across school, outpatient, acute, rehab and skilled nursing settings. Sara holds a Bachelors in Communication Disorders from Butler University and a Master's in Speech Pathology from Purdue University.

Jennifer Stanley, MA, CCC-SLP
Jennifer Stanley joined Lingraphica in 2018. She has experience providing speech and language services for the adult population in acute, skilled, outpatient and home health settings. Jennifer also has early intervention experience providing speech and language services to the 0-3 population in the natural environment. Jennifer holds a BS in speech pathology and audiology and a MA in speech pathology from Ball State University, Muncie, IN.

Teresa Thompson, MA, CCC-SLP
Teresa joined Lingraphica in 2020. She has more than 12 years of experience in speech-language pathology and has worked as a speech-language pathologist with adults in the acute care, outpatient, skilled nursing, and home health settings. Teresa earned her BSBA from the University of Denver and her Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology from Northwestern University.
